Issue# 7 Liger & Tigon

tigon

liger

Today I saw an interesting news - liger and tigon . I think tigers and lions are not the same species but biologist can mate a tiger with a lion or a lion with a tiger. What a miracle it is! Tigers are smaller than lions, so tigers usually can't fight with lions. Unexpectedly, they can breed another species. If the father is lion and mother is tiger, their child is liger. If the father is tiger and mother is lion, their child is tigon. The liger is more common than the tigon. The liger is bigger than tigon. In the modern world, our gene manipulation is growing rapidly. Next time, what kind of odd animals will the biologist produce? I don't know but I believe God won't be happy at all...

Yeah, this is pretty interesting in my opinion.

We tend to think of this kind of genetic manipulation as a modern thing, but really it's been going on for a long time. There were descriptions of making ligers two hundred years ago and who knows how long before that. Other examples that are ancient would include Mules (horse and donkey mix) which have been around for many hundreds or even thousands of years. Mules are sterile, and I think most tiger/lion mixes are sterile too.

No just animals either. Corn, for example, came about because ancient selectively reproduced corn and "engineered" it to be a certain way.

So people have been doing this sort of thing for thousands of years. Only now with our understanding of genetics I guess we just have a better idea how it's done.

People don't think genetic manipulation will take some terrible side effects for our life. They just want to produce a new species at all. That's a funny game to them I guess. I can't imagine how the world will be transformed...@@
