Celluloid Closet Questions

1.
I recommend Jet Li to be my representative. In Hollywood, Jet Li succeeds in playing a Kung Fu fighter. The success of Asian kung fu stars in America works against Asian American actors and filmmakers by perpetuating a single, limited image of Asians in the minds of audiences and Hollywood decisionmakers. I know many foreigners want to visit Taiwan and some of their reasons are learning Kung Fu. Foreigners consider that Taiwan has great fighters who can teach them Kung Fu. In the recent years, there are increasingly films are about Kung Fu, such as Kiss of the Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, The Forbidden Kingdom, Mulan and so on. It's a positive stereotype.

I've heard of someone told me that one time when he was in a lobby, he saw a man(Chinese) who wore a night-robe hanging around the lobby. What a shame! How dare he was so shameless? It makes me feel embarrassed that I'm a Chinese, too. I have a friend who comes from New York she said that when she arrived in Taiwan, she saw some people chew a mysterious thing which makes people threw up blood! How scary scene it was and disgusting. I don't know how to expain that it's just like Chinese gum. One day, when I turned up TV, there was a talk show about Chinese traditional food. Could you guess what I saw on TV? Yes, I saw one guy was eating and spitting! Gosh! Didn't he care about he was interviewed at that time? It's too much to say that Chinese have many bad habits. It almost becomes a representitive impression about Chinese people. It's a negative one.

2.
I've seen the movie"Kill Bill", and in this movie the enemy is Japanese. When we talk about Japan, the Ninja will appear. It's all our impression about Japan. So, it's a kind of stereotype. There are still other examples such as "The Ring" about mysterious spirits, "Godzilla" about a horrible monster and so on. These are Japanese which are shot by the Hollywood. They are relative to Japan traditional impression to people.

3.
If I ask 100 people, they will give me the same answer - men kiss men, so they are couples, aren't they? It's obvious men are usually not sensitive creatures and they won't show their emotion with a very intimate action, just like women. People believe that if males are good friends, they don't show their friendship by this sick action. At most males usually hit friend's back or bottom. Friendship doesn't need such intimate action. However, we can see females kiss each other or lead their hands each other. Is it curious that why males can't do the same action? I think between two females have a feeling like adoration or a kind of friendship. They want to show their special friendship. They just think why they can lead their hands with boyfriends, but why not friends? Not only love but also friendship, females can do those things.
Therefore, no matter you're straight or lesbian, you can kiss each other. On the contrary, males do those things and they are probably considered a gay right away. That is to say lesbians are the covert gender but gays are dominant relationship.

Assignment - Gay rights

1.

Of course, parents in Taiwan don't want to face this kind of frustrated truth. According to Chinese traditional custom, people just want their children, boys will become a father and girls become a mother. That is the normal situation in the world. In Taiwan, there is only Man can be the inheritor from their fathers or ancestor. It involves sexual discrimination. Let's talk about parents' mind. I know most of parents want their children to grow up normally. Parents usually ask their sons "Do you have any girlfriends?" and this would be the very serious problem. Why do boys have to love girls? Those children choose to not talk to their parents about the gender problem because they are afraid of being blamed by their parents. So, the best way is to hide the secret. It's really difficult to hear from someone tell parents that " I'm a gay or a lesbian." This situation still exsists now and it becomes a famous issue in Taiwan. The government notice this problem gets worse and worse. Why should parents react when their children tell them the trth? I have heard from many parents that if their children become gays or lebians, they won't their children come into the house. On the one hand, parents love their children, so they can't accept "abnormal" children. On the other hand, I can't say parents overprotect their children is wrong. All I can say is if this society doesn't give much pressure to "these people", perhaps parents will understand loving people is no matter which gender you are.

2.

In 2003, the executive branch of the Republic of China government (Executive Yuan) proposed legislation granting marriages to same-sex couples under the Human Rights Basic Law; however, it faced opposition among cabinet members and legislators, and has been stalled since and thus not voted on. Currently, Taiwan does not have any form of same-sex unions.
A poll of 6,439 Taiwanese adults released in April 2006 by the National Union of Taiwan Women's Association/Constitutional Reform Alliance concluded that 75% believe homosexual relations are acceptable, while 25% thought they were unacceptable.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Taiwan )

Today, there are no laws against homosexuality. However, there are still some people think it's unacceptable. Well, what should I say? It's all about the freedom and it must be fair to everyone.

Why can heterosexualityhave their marriage? Why same sex marriage can't? It's apparent that it's not fair, isn't it? If all people want a fair human right, same sex marriage in democratic Taiwan should be done. I think it's ironic to the religion because Christian says we are brothers and sisters, that is to say we are the same to God. Nevertheless, Christian hates homosexuality. There must be something unreasonalbe doctrines between true love and morality. Although some people can't accept this, it's still a trend in the world. Same sex marriage will legalize in Taiwan.

3.

Gays and Lesbians are all human. Perhaps you can't accept their activities but you can't deny it that it's all about different love. Love is always there and love isn't guilty. You can regard it as an art in the world. Don't blame them and they just want a perfect love peacefully.

Homework - Harvey Milk

In my opinion, Harvey Milk is a brave man that he was the first one who wanted to give gay people support. People always regard Gay as a guilt but Harvey think everyone should have their basic human rights, why not gay? I believe there were a lot of people didn't face this situation because it's not natural. He was a gay, but he hadn't taken this as a shame. He even came out of the closet and claimed his suggestion to gay people. It's obvious that from this video he devoted himself to giving his knowledge to gay people. That's a way to solve this embarrassing issue and he knew there were a lot of gay people who were afraid of facing it. In this documentary, his friends all love him so much. That is to say Harvey was really a kind person, but how could Dan White kill him so firmly? Did Harvey owe his money to Dan White? No way! No wonder after Harvey died, there were huge crowds of people walked on the street to mourn for him. To me, his most impressive sentence is "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door". Is this a prediction that he would be assassinated one day? I have no idea, but I'm sure he really did his best to complete his dream.

Assignment - Poems

I love Maya Angelou's Touched by An Angel. I think in this poem there are two people who fall in love each other, but they can't tell anyone their love in public. From my point of view, it includes two significant points - love and taboo. First of all, why"love?" It's obvious that in the first line of the second stanza "Love arrives." shows the point. When someone falls in love, they really don't care about the morality in the society. Because love is everything, they need their lovers not anyone else. If we have love, we will be strong to fight anything. In the same stanza, the sixth line, "love strikes away the chains of fear," love will make us be free from all obstacles.

Moreover, where is the "Taboo"? In the first stanza, "exiles from delight" means they can't show their true feeling to their lovers, unless "until love leaves its high holy temple" they just talked about their love under the darkness. That's why the "Taboo" comes from and this is the only way to set them free. Solving this problem is only love. All they have to do is to be brave to face their ecstasies.

Why do I be interested in this poem"Touched by An Angel" ? I have two reasons.
First, I also meet the same feeling right now and I really have no guts to solve this problem. I can't understand why people are so strict to me that I can't control my emotions. I totally catch the author's mind if my explanation about this poem is right. Sometimes I just run away when I meet such this kind of problem, I'm a coward I guess.
Then, my situation is in the blind alley and I deserve it. I have no complaint about this thing because it's totally about my imagination which makes me feel upset. Taboo might be the best description, so I don't dare to cross this line. I know I can't but I want to be free. How should I do? Be brave? Yeah, it must be kidding and if it's true, my parents will kill me. Therefore, the only thing I can do is to hide my emotions.
I'm so envious that the author can liberate from this invisible jail. Perhaps this poem just wants to bring us courage to rich our spirits.

Response Questions : medical testing & animal testing on cosmetics

1.
Why do we use animals as Animal-Based Science? I think it must have its necessity. It's apparent that scientists don't want to hurt human beings, so they just experiment with drugs on animals. First, We have to believe some experiments are necessary, and they can't be substituted. Then, an appropriate animal based science doesn't cause intolerable pain on animals. Finally, if we do the suitable experiment carefully, people will work out the plan of animal based science and take care about animal's rights. They are all positive thoughts.
On the other hand, those experiments are always controversial issues. " Should animals have to be suffered for human? " " Will killing animals be a bad habit to make us more brutal? " " Are there any solutions to replace animal science? " Because those researchers have been trained to regard animals as tools, they take animal's pain for granted and they even don't feel guilty. However, there is no doubt that the animal science brings us a lot of benefits.

2.
These cosmetics use animal testing on cosmetics in the following: Lux,Dove,Ponds,Elizabeth Arden,Lancome,Maybelline,Vichy,Johnson & Johnson,Lancaster,Biotherm and so on. This information is on this website "click here "

3.
In my opinion, those cosmetics company want to save their cost to be the least, so they must use some inhuman experiments to produce their cosmetics. Of course, it's not a good idea at all. I know that, but in the meanwhile, we should think about how we can do to reduce those cosmetics. We can see so many companies which produce cosmetics with animal testing. Everyone has sympathy if they are human beings. We can't avoid this issue because we are customers who are also the murders.
Although using cosmetics is the necessary evil to modern people, I believe there are some companies do a successful model to exclude animal testing. Maybe other companies can ask those good companies how to do that. Well, sometimes it's a secret to those good companies. :P
I don't want to use those cosmetics with animal testing. Even if I don't want to be one of the animal killer, I can't afford the expensive cosmetics. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Nevertheless, I do agree with protecting animal rights. If I have abundant money, I will buy non animal testing cosmetics.

Whale Wars

In Asia, we can find there are too many people who want to eat shark's fin. Undoubtedly, it's all about the tradition. Especially in China, a shark's fin is one of the important Manchus and han Chinese complete meal. We can't deny it! Chinese people like to eat it and it includes abundant collagen to protect our joints. Of course, we can't regard the reason as a legal argument. When we saw the video which showed many brutal pictures, did it represent us as the warnings? Human beings destroy the ocean ecosystem constantly and we can imagine what our future will become. Please stop doing these stupid action! If people like to absorb nutrition, we have many choices, such as chicken skin, pig knuckle, and chicken's wing. We don't need to eat shark's fin at all.

I saw the news about killing sharks in Su-ao 2 weeks ago. This shark was pregnant then and it weighed 1930 kg. It's inhuman! How cruel those fishmen are! Did they have any sympathy? I think they just want to make money and they don't think about the living creature. Their behaviors are just like the Japanese, the barbarians! I totally agree with the group " Sea Shepherd." If we don't take any action, we just give them an inch and they'll take a yard. What a ironic issue Taiwan to ban whale shark fishing next year . Next year?! That is to say, people in Taiwan can continue fishing sharks and whales this year until the prohibition carries out? That's ridiculous! If I'm a judge, I will put those fishmen into the jail!!! It must be about ten years unless they would like to admit their faults and stop doing this.

In the meanwhile, we must praise these heroes for their unselfish devotion and sacrifice. They do a great job to protect environment from damage. Let's give them applause for their courage.

Animal Rights 11/18

2.
I think it's too lenient. In my opinion, those animal owners who treat their pets bad, like burnig animals or pouring chemistry to their body. I can't imagine that why people are so cruel to do so. If they love their pets, why should they do such terrible action? I think government should put these owners into the jail and whatever they want to argue. I mean it's no excuse. It's just the owners' faults. I'm glad that the amendment establish these bans to decrease the amount of violators. I also worry about these rules will be enforced in the future. I know the government wants to convince people how compassionate the government is. It's quite a confused action which they want to show. I hope this rule can be done some day. My suggestions are: if the violators are caught by their cruelty to animals, the authorities can assign these people to clean the animals'
3.
Its purpose is concerned about the welfare of animals in Taiwan. They try to raise awareness of the stray problem and education people about the responsibilities of pet ownership.
They rescue sick, injured, and young strays, rehabilitate them, vaccinate them, desex them, and try to find them permanent, caring homes.
In taiwan, some people still eat shark's fin . It is brutal of them to do that. We can't destroy the ecosystem, or it must influence the balance of ecospecies. Although we haven't seen the serious condition, many species will probably become extinct some day. No one can stop the huge impact of animal crisis if we are reckless of protecting animals. We can't let the species die out and it's time to raise the animal rights.

Unit 2 Questions about cheating

1. I'm still a student now, so if I were in their shoes, I wouldn't want to fail these courses. Why? It's obvious that students have the same misunderstanding because they feel they won't get caught cheating. In my opinion, as for this matter, we can't just rely on luck. As a student, we must think if taking efforts is worthless, and other people can get the point easier than us, we can't let them pass these courses. Shall we do the same mistakes as theirs? No way! It should influence our future as much as possible. We can earn the good grades by our honesty not cheating. When I was in the senior high school, I was an English assistant. One day, as usual, in our review class, we took the English quiz. I sat on the front of the blackboard and I found many students stood up and walked around in the class. They wanted to cheat openly! How dare they! Finally, I had no idea to solve this situation so that I just told the English teacher. I can't imagine why they were so shameless. Is the score so important than their pride?

2. Generally speaking, cheating on exams or class works in Taiwan have some punishments in the following.
First, if those cheating people are proved to cheating, they'll be flunked.
Second, if students steal anybody else assignment, it all depends on how much the students steal from others. Probably they will be expelled from school.
Finally, after being proved to cheating, some teachers will give those students an Zero on this exam. This is the most common punishment in Taiwan.
I think it's enough that some teachers will give students a chance to make up their faults. Those cheating on the exams' students even do the volunteer to help people do something. It's a useful way to teach them how to treat people well and learn to respect others' efforts on the exam. No pain, no gain. Students must understand it.

3. If I were a teacher, I think I would give them a chance. However, those people who haven't been caught on cheating still don't be afraid of getting caught. In order to stop them, I have two solutions. Above all, I will establish a " secret box " which students can put their complaints in it. Of course, these complaints include who cheats on the exam, when and how. If many people write the same name, I will give him or her a severe punishment. Then, I will put the pinhole camera into the classroom. For everyone, I couldn't help but make this decision. This is the worst solution that I've ever thought of. I believe that students won't do cheating on the exams forever!

Assignment --- Plagiarism

1. What is the penalty for plagiarism at Stanford University?
The standard penalty for a first-time violation of the Honor Code is a one-quarter suspension and 40 hours of community service. If the student is in his/her final quarter of enrollment the standard practice is to convert the one-quarter suspension into a two-quarter delay in the conferral of the degree.

2. What are the six possible punishments you can get at the University of Washington for plagiarism? (Hint: you don’t have to read the whole thing. Read the beginning and then skim and scan for the correct parts)
They are Disciplinary Warning, Reprimand, Restitution, Disciplinary Probation, Suspension and Dismissal.

3. Google the words “Fired for plagiarism”. List three examples of people who have lost their jobs for plagiarism. Make a brief summary of them and write it on your blog. (there are far more than three you can find)
Madonna G. Constantine was the former professor of psychology and education at Columbia University. She had plagiarized the work of two former students and a former colleague. She claimed the accuser had stolen her work.
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin's Tim Ryan was fired for plagiarism. His stories contain phrases lifted from elsewhere, including Wikipedia and NPR.
San Jose Mercury News intern David Cragin was suspended for using material from the Washington Post. He was then fired when more evidence of plagiarism was found.

4. Read the following examples of plagiarism and the action that was taken because of it at one American university. Do you agree with the punishment in these cases? If yes, why. If not, explain why.
I totally agree with the punishment in these cases except for No.5. I think if a student wants to confess his or her fault that we have to give him or her a chance. Many students don’t want to face their behavior, and they usually tell a lie to protect themselves. That’s not a good idea if they commit plagiarism. At first, if they can acknowledge their fault, the punishment probably becomes not so severe.

Women's Right - Assignment

1.
I think the women's right is a very important in this society, or why are there many women on a lot of marches nowadays? Why do people usually think men can do the job better than women? But some women's ability is better than men, prejudice about women is ridiculous. In modern society, why are there still many phenomena? Ok, let's talk about gender inequality. Why does this happen? I think there are two reasons in the following.
First, it's a natural condition. Women have to bear new birth, and in ancient times, this would be a fatal shortcoming to women. Why? Because medical science was not developed enough, many women would die because of dystocia. In addition, men had to work outside, so they got a lot of social information. Therefore, they had the superiority to use politics, economy and education to set up the Code of ethic - "Men are Superior to Women."
Second is about the contrived cause. In other words, some of men are not close to women. They can't realize how women should be paid for the pregnant. Women not only are pain for the pregnant, but also can't work and educate due to giving birth to a baby. Although they have a talent to get a great jod, they can't excercise their speciality to the full. Men even use this hardship to establish unfair laws and systems to women.
To sum up, what should we do to help women overcome an obstacle about unequality gender? First thing you can do is to help them get rid of problems during their pregnant times. Therefore, they just have free time to get the educational opportunity. After they have their professional skills, they don't need to live on men. Thus they can rise their right in politics and education. Government should provide more and more job opportunities in order to fix this problem.
2.
I think this phenomenon is not genetic problem. Although male is good at science and female is good at language, there must be some exceptions. In my point of view, this is about how hard you work for and it's your own chioce. For example, when you were a child, you were very interested in math and you always lent some books in math. Perhaps you will go toward math in the future. Practice makes perfect. Of course, you must do a great job in math. Who says women's strength is lower than men? There are some women have great strength. Who says men are more careless than women? There are some men are more careful than women. This is a stereotype and a gender discrimination. If we want to solve this problem, we will do some effort in our textbook first. There is no royal road to learning. We can't always say what men or women should do. It's all because of their own chioce. If they want to get a better life, they must try their best to do everything. No pain, no gain. It's not the gender business.
3.
In these mass media, women are all dressed skirts and men are dressed pants. But why, there is no any laws to show men can't wear skirts. This is a gender stereotype. In the formal party, people feel women should wear skirts because skirts let women be so feminine. That is the common situation, so, of course, women can wear pants too. In eastern culture, there is no man to wear skirts. In western culture, the Scotch men can wear plaid which is a kind of skirt. Although there is few condition about men wearing skirt, we can't say all culture would not be able to accept it. Sure, this is a kind of global tide and it's also a style of fashion. We can't judge anything on it. No matter which style you put on, there is no doubt that men are always men and women are women.
4.
Well, I think maternity leave is not enough in Taiwan. I heard about my mother said she only had six weeks off in maternity leave. That's a terrible amount. Let's see. Many companies always take their profit for the first place and maternity leave must be an obstacle to make company progress. This is a cruel society and the government just let these companies do such bad attitude to the pregnant women. They even ignore women's right and they just claim they will do more things to women during the election. That's all nonsense, isn't it? Why should women face this awesome hurt from pregnancy and inhuman dealing? In the first article, CLA proposed to encourage women to give birth and men can receive paternity leave and same amount of compensation. Why is it not enough? It's obvious that men's salary is usually higher than women. This policy just brings out how helpless women are. Women not only work for their living, but also face many kinds of inequality. They don't even have enough time and money to take care their health. That's why it si not sufficient. Government should establish laws about how to treat women well and how to reduce women's pain at work. For example, government can build some Nursery Schools and subsidize some enterprises to set up Day Care Center. I believe if they can set up these organizations, they will provide support for new mothers in Taiwan. It really works. but it must be done now.

Assignment on September 30

I think there are many values on the study of humanities. Take us for an example. We major in British Literature, so we must search many information about British backround. It could be difficult because we're foreigners to British. We can't deny that the study of humanites is not valuable to our career in the future, but I believe we can learn how to socialize with people from this cultural background.

Where can we find these cultural knowledgment? It's very obvious that we can get this knowledge from the study of humanities.
If we want to be a sales, we will use some important issue from their country. It's a good way to get into the point and customers may feel glad to join these interesting conversations.

By the way, when we went to the movie theatre, we could analize this movie in every point of view. People may think how deeper education you are! People are educated by the literature, history and philosophy. Therefore, our life will become more exciting and gorgeous. It's time to enter the mysterious world.

Second Life

This is my first time to see what the second life is. I think it's just like teenager's online game but it's much more true than the online game. In this video game, I see many possibilities which we can't do them in our real life. Maybe I can get a new life from it. For example, if I want to make friends from other country, I can meet them on the game. I don't have to go abroad and I can save money and time. Just open the Internet. And if I want to get some information about other university. I can even go to the online university. At least, I can learn more from it than the website. It sounds cool. This age becomes an Internet world so people want a simple and fast tool to finish some missions. And that would make their life more convenient. Therefore, I think I am in a modern world and I have to be the one of new second life in this age.
